Middlefield Collegiate Institute (or MCI) is a semestered, public high school in the neighborhood of East Milliken in the city of Markham, Ontario, Canada, and is part of the York Region District School Board. It is located in South-east Markham, bordered by the major arteries McCowan Road to the west, Steeles Avenue to the south, Markham Road to the east and 14th Avenue to the North. The school was built in 1992 to relieve pressure from Milliken Mills High School because of the quickly expanding population of the newly developed East Milliken neighbourhood, which was formerly forest around the Rouge River. Until 2000, the school was underused, with no more than 130 students graduating each year (compared to about 450 in 2010-2011). Thanks to a large development process and an even bigger immigrant influx, the school population almost doubled in the next five years and has been steadily, but gradually climbing since then. Three significant events have taken place at Middlefield C.I. In 1999, a female teacher at the school was charged with sexual assault for having a child with a male student, causing a large scandal within the community. This event brought serious crackdown by then Principal Cecil Roach, and mostly uprooted any inappropriate relationships between teachers and students by setting clear rules which were not present before. In 2005, a stabbing took place in a Middlefield Stairwell, but was an isolated event. Further rules put in place by Principal Tom Thompson ensured no other injuries of such seriousness took place at MCI. In 2008, former Computer Science teacher Rosanna Baber sued the school for alleged misconduct, but the charges were dropped at a later Tribunal. In 2009, Middlefield had its first major expansion, building a tech wing with six new classrooms in the Southern Wing. It currently houses the Auto, Construction, Hairstyling tech classes, and some Applied English classes and Communication Tech classes.
